Introduction to Misha

Hi Everyone!

Welcome back to the blog, I've been a bit AWAL over the holidays, my bad. It was Everly's first Christmas so I was kind of distracted.

I thought I'd do a little introduction to my Alaskan Klee Kai Misha. I know there has been a lot of interested in the breed lately, especially because they look like miniature huskies. The breed is rather new and still quite tight knit. There's not a lot of mixed breeding and they are not widely available. You have to contact a breeder and apply to get on a waiting list, they are also quite expensive...

I've always been a dog person, I grew up with a lovely Shepherd, Lab, Husky mixed named Chloe. She was kind, gentle, and loved to have her belly scratched. When Mike and I got married and moved out we both missed our family dogs (his family had a Bichon Frise named Woody). When Chloe passed away I was so upset about it and knew that I needed to get a dog of my own. It was time to expand my little family and take on a new responsibility. I had remembered my brother was researching the AKK breed and started doing some research of my own. My husband is very allergic to pet fur, when he was younger his family had golden retrievers and he used to have to get allergy shots once a week. So even though I desperately wanted a Siberian Husky or Malamute we couldn't get one. I was used to bigger dogs and wasn't too sure about getting a small one. But after doing a lot of research Mike and I decided to contact Canadian AKK breeders.

AKK's are not hypoallergenic, they do shed quite a lot, especially if you don't brush them on a weekly basis (which I have to admit I've been slacking on since having Everly). That being said Mike hasn't had any allergic reactions to Misha's fur and he sleeps on the bed with us so so far so good!

We were put on the waiting list for two breeders, one in Alberta and on in Sault Ste. Marie Ontario. after a few months I decided to contact the breeders to see if they had any litters coming up soon. Turns out our breeder in Ontario was expecting three pups and one could be ours when he was 8 weeks old in August 2012.

We drove out to Sault Ste. Marie (which is 8 hours from where we live) and met Misha for the first time. We were immediately in love, and surprised at how tiny he was. Misha was the runt of a litter of 3 male puppies. He was most likely going to be toy sized when fully grown.

Misha is currently 2 1/2 years old, he weighs in at a grand total of 9.5lbs! He is very skittish and follows me everywhere. He does not do well with new people and environments. He's a dog that while we go for a walk he freaks out if he sees someone else walking there dog in our direction. This I think is our fault. When he was a puppy he was great, but when he was 6 months old he jumped and broke his front leg. After thousands of dollars in vet fees he has surgery to fix a metal plate to his leg to set the bone. He was in a cast and on bed rest for 3 months. Which is hard for a 6 month old puppy bursting with energy. Because of that I think he got very attached to me (I was home all day with him after losing my job). Since then I think we really need to work on socialization. He does very well with our extending family now and friends we see a lot. He loves his cousin CeCe and Charlie (parents and in-laws puppies). And loves new dogs who are in his environment.

He's quite the little spaz, he thinks he can jumped off the tallest heights and not get hurt, he thinks he's a cat. he runs and trips over his own feet, hardly ever makes it up the stairs without misjudging a step and stumbles. But he's very loving towards myself, Mike and Everly. He's a cuddler and loves to sit with us. He has severe separation anxiety and makes a big racket when we come home from being out. He has a hedgehog toy that he suckles on when he's tired, like a pacifier. It's really cute.

He's teeny tiny and I'm beyond in love with him. He's my little weirdo and he's gorgeous.

Below are some of my favorite pictures of him. Enjoy! Feel free to ask me any questions about him or the breed!
